What Is Appendicitis?

The appendix is a small, finger-shaped pouch attached to the large intestine on the lower right side of your abdomen. When the appendix becomes blocked or infected, it causes painful inflammation. Common symptoms that require urgent medical attention include:

  • Pain starting near the belly button and shifting to the lower right abdomen
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite and fever If left untreated, an inflamed appendix can burst, leading to a life-threatening abdominal infection (peritonitis).

Types of Appendectomy Procedures

Surgeons determine the best approach based on the severity of the inflammation, the presence of a rupture, and the patient’s medical history

Open Surgery

The surgeon makes a single incision near the hernia site to
directly access and repair the weakened area. This approach may involvestitches (primary closure) or the placement of a mesh patch to reinforce the
muscle wall.

Laparoscopic (Keyhole) Appendectomy

This is the most common and minimally invasive approach.

  •  The Process: The surgeon makes one to three tiny incisions and inflates the abdomen with safe carbon dioxide gas to create working space. A thin, lighted camera (laparoscope) is inserted to guide the removal of the appendix using specialized tools.
  • Benefits: Typically results in less post-operative pain, a shorter hospital stay (often 24 hours or less), and faster recovery.

Open Appendectomy

This traditional method is used if the appendix has ruptured, if a large abscess is present, or if laparoscopic access isn’t safely possible.

  • The Process: The surgeon makes a single 2 to 4-inch incision in the lower right side of the abdomen to directly access and remove the appendix.
  • Recovery: Typically requires a longer hospital stay and a slightly extended recovery period compared to the laparoscopic method.

Recovery and Aftercare

  • Hospital Stay

Patients undergoing laparoscopic removal often go home within one to two days, while open surgery may require a 2 to 3-day stay.

  • Timeline

Light activity is encouraged right away, though strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and driving should typically be avoided for several weeks.
