What is Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer typically originates in the cells lining the airways (bronchi) or the small air sacs (alveoli). When DNA damage or cell mutations occur, these cells lose their ability to self-regulate and divide unchecked, forming tumors that obstruct breathing and can metastasize (spread) to the brain, bones, or liver.

The Two Main Types

  Healthcare providers classify lung cancer into two primary categories based on how they appear under a microscope and grow.

Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)

The most common type, accounting for about 80% to 85% of cases. It generally grows and spreads more slowly than other types. Subtypes include adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma.

Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC)

Making up the remaining 15% to 20% of cases, this type is highly aggressive. It is strongly associated with tobacco use and tends to grow and spread much more quickly than NSCLC.

    Because the lungs have very few nerve endings, tumors can grow without causing initial pain. As the disease progresses, patients may experience.

  • Causes and Risk Factors

    While cigarette smoking is the primary cause of about 85% to 90% of lung cancer cases, it is not the only risk factor.

  • Prevention and Screening

    Quitting smoking significantly reduces the risk of developing lung cancer, even in individuals who have smoked for many years. For high-risk individuals— such as adults aged 50 and older who have a heavy smoking history—annual low-dose CT scans are highly recommended to catch the disease early, when it is most treatable.
