Sebaceous Cyst Surgery
What is a Sebaceous Cyst?
While commonly referred to as “sebaceous cysts,” these are typically epidermal inclusion or epidermoid cysts. They are slow-growing, harmless, fluid-filled sacs beneath the skin that contain keratin and cellular debris rather than sebum. While many are painless, they can occasionally become inflamed, rupture, or develop into painful abscesses if left untreated.
The Surgical Removal Procedure
The goal of surgical excision is to remove the entire cyst wall (capsule). If the wall is left behind, the cyst is highly likely to recur.
Anesthesia
The area is thoroughly cleaned, and a local anesthetic is injected tonumb the site.
Removal
The cyst is carefully separated from surrounding tissue and extractedin its entirety
Closure
The incision is closed using sutures (stitches), medical glue, orsurgical tape. The procedure usually takes around 30 minutes.
Recovery and Aftercare
-
Wound Care
The incision must be kept clean and dry. A sterile dressing is applied, which may need to be changed periodically.
-
Stitch Removal
Non-dissolvable stitches are generally removed 7 to 10 days post-operation.
-
Pain Management
Mild discomfort and swelling are normal, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
